Come Out With Your Checkbook Open

Tuesday, September 21, 2010 - - 0 Comments

Joey, daring the spotlights that were scanning the warehouse in which he was holed up, took a quick look out the window at the crowd below, and shouted, "Never, you dirty, rotten bill collectors!" Then he ducked back to the haven beneath the sill.

He recently got more into debt than usual – in fact, he found himself surrounded by it – and he was having a restless dream about the multitude of bill collectors who were haunting his mind. Being an old movie buff with smiling memories of Jimmy Cagney, his brain had somehow cast him in a role familiar to all who feel a similar attachment to the Cagney legacy. His black suit was dusty, his white shirt was open, and he had a bottle of whisky beside him, from which he took an occasional reinforcement.

"Joey, do you hear me?" the Verizon customer service rep called through a bullhorn. "This is Verizon."

"Whaddaya want?" Joey called back.

"This is a final disconnect notice."

"Already?" Joey replied, and looked down at the pile of bills scattered on the floor. He started to leaf through them nervously and found the Verizon invoice. "I have your bill right here," he yelled out the window. "It's only fifteen days overdue. Don't I get a month or two before you disconnect my service?"

"Not anymore, kid," the Verizon rep shouted back. "You got a lousy payment record."

"Yeah, so what do you want me to do about it?" Joey replied, knowing he didn't have the funds to pay the bill at the moment. He eked out a living as a freelance journalist, and he had only recently come through a period where he had not placed his usual number of articles. Thankfully, he had finally sold a piece to Travel & Leisure.

Just then one of the cops in the crowd lifted his own bullhorn, and called, "Joey, this is Officer O'Hara. Come out with your checkbook open – or else!"

"Or else what, you dirty, stinkin' copper?" Joey shouted back.

"I'll tell ya what, kid," the Verizon rep interposed. "We interrupt your outgoing service. And get this, Joey. Three days later, we interrupt your incoming calls – and that includes your DSL Internet service."

"No, no, anything but my DSL!" Joey called. "I'm a freelance magazine writer. If I can't email my articles, I'll be finished. Have a little mercy, will ya? I've been a Verizon customer for over ten years!"

"Sorry, Joey," the Verizon rep replied, "We gotta go by the rules."

At that moment, the Con Ed rep reached for the bullhorn, informing the rep from Verizon, "It's my turn. You've had your shot." Then he bellowed, "Joey, do you know who this is? Con Ed."

"What are you doin' here?" Joey asked.

"You know as well as I do. Your electric bill is in arrears."

"Arrears?" Joey replied. "I'll give you arrears!" And with that, he mooned the crowd.

"Watch it, kid," Officer O'Hara called through his bullhorn. "That's indecent exposure. You could end up in the pen."

"You think I care?" Joey shouted back. "At least, there I won't have to pay for my room and board."

Reacting to that comment, a lawyer, who had been unaccustomedly silent until now, reached for the bullhorn. "Speaking about room and board, Joey, I'm a lawyer with a message from your landlord."

"No, no, not that, too!" Joey agonized, and, in Cagneyesque style, he made two fists and rubbed his temples with them.

"You're over a month behind!" the lawyer reminded him, and held up an ominous, legal-size document. "I have the eviction notice right here."

"An eviction notice?" Joey wailed.

"Yeah," the lawyer replied. "You gotta vacate the premises!"

Humanist Terrorists Nabbed In Miami; Planned To Plant Explosive Books

Tuesday, September 14, 2010 - - 0 Comments

A group that calls itself humanist terrorists was apprehended by the FBI in a preemptive strike in Miami. The terrorist cell, which claims affiliation with the Middle Atlantic terror group all-Libraries, was infiltrated by an FBI operative.

The leader of the group confided to the informant that the members planned to plant explosive books in various locations throughout the United States, including the Sears Tower, a number of FBI buildings, and radical Muslim mosques.

The humanist terrorist group had been operating out of the basement of an as yet undisclosed free public library in Miami. The FBI found plentiful evidence of the group's plans, including many intelligent books generally considered to be easily accessible and therefore highly dangerous.

At a news conference held to announce the arrests, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated, "Fortunately, the plot by this home-grown terrorist cell was disrupted in the planning stages. The group was still trying to get funding to acquire a sufficient number of books."

In a deposition, a spokesman for the humanist terrorists confessed, "We were planning to spread enlightenment wherever we could, so we selected two of the most informative and readable philosophy books of recent times, both by the leading but now deceased humanist terrorist Bertrand Russell. First, we were going to stage an attack with his landmark The History of Western Philosophy, just to provide people with an overview of our radical ideology. Then we hoped to follow that up with a strike using The Selected Writings Of Bertrand Russell. Our goal was, I confess, to disrupt the new Dark Age that appears to be descending on a worldwide basis."

The prosecuting attorney outlined the government's case, saying, "The confession of this self-styled humanist terrorist clearly indicates there was a clear intention to disrupt the deadly ignorance that pervades much of today's society. Obviously, the group poses a threat to the widespread determination of much of the world's population to return to a time so wonderfully ill-informed that it can truly be described as The Dark Ages come back."

The families of the terrorists were startled by the arrests and continued to maintain that the suspects are innocent.

As one mother said, "My son is not a terrorist. He's a good boy who somehow came to believe in radical ideas like truth and wisdom. If he's freed on bail, I promise to limit his reading time."

What's Entertainment? Intellectuals Debating The Merits And Demerits Of Economic Freedom

Sunday, September 12, 2010 - - 0 Comments

Today, few things are more entertaining than observing the continuing debate among intellectuals about the merits and demerits of economic freedom.

What is the cause of the levity? Most of the opinion is decidedly about the demerits of economic freedom, with a pronounced preference for any form of governmental supervision that would supposedly assure the equitable distribution of material wealth.

The problem is, of course, that the very debate, or intellectual freedom itself, is only made possible by economic freedom, which is the principal support of free speech. Why? It is a truth far too often demonstrated that once the state owns your meal ticket, you're a slave of the state. And you better shut your mouth or you could end up in a Gulag or a rice paddy.

Or, as the philospher Herbert Marcuse noted, a centrally controlled economy is actually state capitalism, conducted by insiders with decided benefits allocated for those who open and close the national treasury.

Meanwhile, the rest of the citizenry are expected to wake up and row the ship of state, with scant provision of bread and water for the dutiful and a plentiful supply of lashes for any who dare to complain.

A free economy is far from perfect, but it supports the stage on which intellecutal freedom may cavort.

So wisdom comes down on the side of improving it, not abandoning it, and with so much clarity that debate with a bias against it is downright amusing.

Chinese New Year In Melbourne

Sunday, September 5, 2010 - - 0 Comments

Eighty people carry the 92-metre Dai Loong (Great Dragon) through Melbourne's Chinatown to celebrate the Chinese New Year - and it's considered lucky to touch it. All locals join in with the celebrations, whether of Chinese descent or not. February 2010 heralds the Year of the Tiger and, as usual, the festival features traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural events with dances, food stalls, arts and crafts.

Always a vibrant area of the city, well known for quality restaurants and all things Asian, Chinatown comes alive with street stalls and entertainment at this time. Meanwhile, Australians of Chinese descent conduct the necessary rituals at home to bring in luck for the coming year. The Chinese were first attracted toMelbourne by the gold rush in nearby Victorian towns, from about 1851 onwards. Ships sailed from Hong Kong and businesses flourished as the new arrivals provided supplies for the miners or went off to join them. The area is now an integral part of theMelbourne scene, contributing to the city's many festivals throughout the year.

The Origin
Chinese New Year is the first day of the lunar calendar, so it is also called the Lunar New Year. And it is also referred to as the Spring Festival since it is the beginning of the Spring term, which is the first term of the 24 terms on the lunar canlendar. It was recorded that Chinese started to celebrateChinese New Year from about 2000 BC, though the celebrations were held on different times under different emperors. They started to celebrate Chinese New Year on the first day of the lunar calendar based on Emperor Wu Di's almanac of the Han Dynasty.

Legend says the celebrations of Chinese New Year may be related to a beast known as Nian. The beast Nian came out to eat people on new years until an old man found a way to conquer it. Then people started to observe and celebrateChinese New Year. The word "Nian" now has the same meaning as Chinese New Year, which is used as commonly as Chinese New Year . And people often use the term "Guo Nian", which may originally mean "passed or survived the Nian". Now everyone loves Guo Nian.

Melbourne China town History
It was the discovery of gold in 1851 which attracted Chinese immigration to Victoria on a large scale. Ships sailed to Australia from Hong Kong with their cargo of men who had come in search of the "New Gold Mountain".The small but burgeoning Chinese community in Little Bourke Street provided for all the needs of the diggers - lodgings en route to the goldfields, food, equipment and medicine. In the 1860s many Chinese district associations began to purchase land in little Bourke Street to build clubrooms which would serve as meeting places for the Chinese community. From the early 1870s until the early twentieth century,Chinatown experienced a stage of growth. For as gold dried up on the diggings, those who did not return to China went back to Melbourne's Chinatown which, for those who stayed, represented the only community they had. They found work and established businesses to cater for the local Chinese and non Chinese markets. The 1880s were the days of "Marvellous Melbourne", the time when industry was booming.

The new labour laws combined with the effects of the "White Australia Policy" introduced in 1901 plunged Chinatown into darkness. It was no longer the residential haven for the Chinese, as the population declined alongside business. When the government eased immigration laws in 1947 Chinatown revived itself once more, spreading its population over suburban Melbourne. Chinatown today now predominantly extends along Little Bourke Street between Swanston St and Spring St. Its cabinet makers and lodging houses may now be gone but eating houses and top class restaurants now take their place with the streetscape and its low-rise brick buildings, retaining its historic character.

It remains a busy and important social and economic centre for the Chinese Community and proudly stands as one of Melbourne city's most popular venues. Throughout the year, there are many traditional festivals and activities, making Chinatown a popular destination in the city centre for local, interstate and international visitor.
